Is it possible to feel good when I am not feeling well?
Can I find peace within myself despite my difficulties?
Is it okay to disagree with the way things are?
Living Compassion creates a loving layer around whatever is happening in the moment. It tries to see everything as life energy and to accept all experiences beyond our judgments. Instead of resisting life, we surrender to its flow and truly experience it. This means practicing surrender and acceptance instead of giving up and resisting—both on the meditation cushion and in everyday life.
Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is deeply rooted in spirituality, which is often felt and seen, even if Marshall did not always explicitly name it. Robert Gonzales, a longtime companion of Marshall’s, focused particularly on the spiritual aspects of NVC and developed his approach, Living Compassion, from it. This approach empowers people to access the ever-present resources of NVC and find inner peace and freedom through acceptance (not resignation) of the present state.
In 2023, Robert Gonzales‘ book “The Spirituality of Nonviolent Communication – A Course in Living Compassion” was published in German. This book serves as the basis for our 7-part online course. Over seven evenings, we will delve into the seven chapters of the book, practice Robert’s teachings, and immerse ourselves in the field of Living Compassion and the spirituality of NVC.
The book is based on an online course of the same title that Robert taught in 2020. It was lovingly and carefully compiled by Filipa Hope, Simone Anliker, and Lynd Morris and published by Robert’s wife, Ruth Joy. We sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this great work and made this resource available to a wider audience.
Reading the book is not a prerequisite for the course. I recommend it, but I will summarize the chapters at the beginning of each evening. Through shared practice and exchange, we will delve deeper into the spirituality of NVC.
My journey with Living Compassion
My first encounter with Living Compassion was in 2011. At that time, I knew little about NVC and was just taking my first steps in feeling and exploring my needs. A weekend workshop on “The Living Energy of Needs,” based on Robert’s work, hit me like a bolt of lightning. Suddenly, I had words for things I had felt for a long time; my feelings were no longer “too much,” but welcome and became important signposts and companions. Needs became guides and a constant presence, a resource I learned to access at any time.
In 2013, I met Robert in person for the first time, and it had a profound impact on me. I participated in his two-year “Euro-Life” program as a participant and later three more times as an assistant and organizer. At least once a year, we invited him to Frankfurt to give a three-day introduction to Living Compassion.
Join us on this journey to explore and embody the profound teachings of Living Compassion and the spirituality of Nonviolent Communication.
With his death, I now consider it a great privilege to have spent so much time with him. At the same time, I feel it is my “calling” or task to now pass on and deepen this work. I am following Robert’s invitation to pass on what Living Compassion has triggered in me, how it works in me, and what it means to me. His book “The Spirituality of Nonviolent Communication” serves as a structure. I highly recommend reading the book before or during the course, but it is not a prerequisite.
